PLACES TO VISIT

Around Ella Town

WHERE IS ELLA

Ella is just roughly 200 kilometers northeast of Colombo, yet feeling like a world away from the popular beaches and tropical climate of Sri Lanka's southern coastline.
Ella, which is perched at a height of 1,041 meters, is located in the Badulla district, on the southern ledge of the Uva Province. Its elevation grants it a (quite welcome) milder climate than the southern lowlands, and with its lovely hills covered in forests and tea plantations, it's the ideal place to begin many hill country activities in Sri Lanka.

NINE ARCH BRIDGE

The Nine Arches Bridge also called the Bridge in the Sky, is a viaduct bridge in Sri Lanka. It is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. It is located in Demodara, between Ella and Demodara railway stations. The surrounding area has seen a steady increase of tourism due to the bridge's architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides. The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, P. K. Appuhami, in consultation with British engineers.

LITTLE ADAM'S PEAK

The second hike in Ella was to Little Adam's Peak, which is a fairly easy hike and popular among tourists. It is named after its big brother, the holy mountain Adam's Peak, which is 2243 m high and a much more challenging climb. The mountain has three names: Adam's Peak (where Adam first set foot on earth after being cast out of heaven), Sri Pada (Buddha's footprint left by the Buddha as he headed towards paradise), and Samanalakande (Butterfly Mountain, where butterflies go to die).

Hiking from Ella

Due to its high height, abundant biodiversity, cloud forests, tea plantations, cave networks, etc., the renowned town of Ella, which is 200 kilometers east of Colombo, is a hiking lover's paradise. One of Sri Lanka's most popular attractions is the Ella gap, which offers views over the country's southern lowlands. The Ella Rock, Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arches Bridge, Bambarakanda Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, the Horton Plains National Park, and numerous other waterfall hikes and nature hikes can all be arranged for in and around this picturesque location.

Train Ride to Ella

The trains in Sri Lanka are unique because they offer more than just a means of transportation; they also offer a carefree experience where passengers may hang out of the windows or doors and converse with laughing locals while sitting outside. The blue train, winding through the foggy tea region. You may take the somewhat longer way than the frequently advised Kandy to Ella train from Colombo to Ella.
